Hello and welcome. My name is Siobhan Heaney and I have developed and run SingTonicity – a method of looking after your health and wellbeing. It’s a method that uses your breath, voice and sound all coming together to give you practical techniques that you can use and take away with you, to help you in times of stress, to help you whenever you’re feeling tired or just physically to give you a tonic, to give you a boost.
Now I have always loved singing and when I was younger I would have loved to have joined a choir or sing in a group but I never had the courage to go ahead and do it. Like a lot of people I had self doubts – thinking I’m not good enough, what will people say if I decide to do this. So I didn’t do any of this for a long time.
About 12 years ago my husband organised singing lessons for me. Now I say he organised it because that’s what he did! He never paid for one lesson! I paid for every single lesson myself! But what it allowed me to do was to have an excuse, if you like, to say, well actually this was my husband’s idea, so that took the pressure off me.
When I started the singing lesson I thought: why did I not do this years ago. I absolutely loved it. My singing teacher encouraged me to take singing examinations, to join a choir and to take up piano. All of this is fine and good and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it, but why did I start SingTonicity?
Well I’ll tell you a little bit about my story.
During the time I was attending my singing lessons, my only sister was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. Along with her husband and her two teenage daughters I became one of her carers. I continued my singing lessons during that time and what I discovered, after she died and life got back to some normality, was that those singing lessons were like therapy for me.
They allowed me to boost my batteries from one week to the next. They allowed me to reenergize myself. It was also the first time I realised that you cannot worry and sing at the same time.
Singing transported me to a different place for that time I was taking my lesson. After my sister’s death, when life began to return to some normality I thought, “you know what, if singing can do this for me then surely it can do it for other people too” and I particularly wanted to reach out to the people that thought they cannot sing.
There is an old Zimbabwen proverb that says” if you can talk you can sing”. I agree very much with that philosophy. I set about establishing SingTonicity to encourage people who thought that they weren’t singers to come along and experience the benefits of using your voice and breath to give them a health boost.
One of the most important things I discovered is that your body does not care whether you sing in tune or not. It just loves and benefits from the vibrations you produce. At classes and Singtonicity events you will hear as much laughter as singing. You will here tribal sounds, songs and harmonies. We also use empowering lyrics so that we have songs that have a special meaning for us.
Songs can help our mood, help boost our energy, if we need it and that is the magic of singing and particularly singing together in a group. It brings us all together very quickly. A very special bond develops within a group that sings together. You know, I could describe all that happens in a class. However I think one of the best ways for you to understand SingTonicity is to actually see it in action.
